December 1, 2004 - “Joy and Giving”
Once again we have arrived at the season of joy and
giving. But why is it that we proclaim this sentiment
for only one month out of the year? Why is it that our
hearts lift in joyous jubilation only from Thanksgiving
until January 1st?
It is true that many would
answer…this is when we celebrate Christmas…the birth of
Christ. Others would think of the custom of giving presents
associated with St. Nicolas.
Let us stop for one moment and think
about what giving means to us and what brings us the
greatest joy. How do we open our hearts to
experience the joy that giving brings? To get in touch with
our intention in giving is to help us understand the deeper
meaning of bringing joy not just to others…but in so doing
opening ourselves to a more joyful life.
As a child I remember emptying my
piggy bank, counting out the small amount of its contents
and allocating equal amounts to spend on Christmas presents
for my Mom, Dad and two brothers. The excitement of going
to the store to choose the most appropriate gift with the
few dollars that I had budgeted was one of the most
rewarding and joyful experiences of my life. We all took
great delight in trying to guess what our small present was
throughout the days proceeding Christmas. It was not the
actual gift that brought me joy but the hours I spent
thinking about my family. The hours filled with love for
them. The joy I felt was the love I carried within my heart
with the intention of giving.
Giving does not need to be set aside
for only once a year. We can continue to carry joy within
our hearts whenever we extend a good action, or wish for
someone else.
To be able to give in silence is to
truly understand the meaning of receiving joy. It is not
how large or grand the gift may be…it is how we feel in our
heart that brings meaning to giving…it is our intention.
To simply try and outdo someone else in the size of our
presents does not necessarily demonstrate caring for
another. In fact it may only be an outward manifestation of
our own insecurity.
Throughout this very special time
let’s try and develop a habit. It takes twenty-one days to
develop a habit so this is a perfect time for it. Lets try
to give an anonymous gift to someone. Lets try and carry
love in our hearts for at least one person we dislike. Let’s
try and concentrate on the thoughts behind our giving (our
intention) and not the size of our presents. Let’s open our
hearts to the true beauty that surrounds us.
Joy and giving was never meat
to be for only one season…it was meant to be a way of life.
Wishing you all the love and joy
your hearts can hold.
