“Good Fortune and Abundance”
As we embark upon this “New Year”
many of us will celebrate with customs and traditions that
have been handed down to us from our ancestors.
Since my ancestry is Italian I would
like to share an Italian custom.
For New Year’s, ancient Romans gave
friends a glass jar full of dates and dried figs in honey,
with a bay leaf branch so the coming year would be sweet and
full of good fortune. Neapolitans (the birthplace of two of
my four Italian Grandparents) still wrap dried figs in fresh
bay leaves and exchange them at New Year’s to ensure
abundance.
Some of you will eat black-eyed peas
on New Year’s day for good luck and others will make New
Year’s resolutions in an effort to rectify some of what they
perceive their shortcomings to be.
No matter how we may choose to begin
the New Year we all delight in the prospect of starting over
again. We are able to feel renewed hope. With hope comes
another chance for that, sometimes very illusive, good
fortune and abundance.
What we sometime fail to realize is
that it would be helpful if we began with a plan. For any
project or accomplishment in life we develop a plan. There
is a plan for college, a plan for weddings, Planned
Parenthood, retirement planning, business planning and many
others areas.
Why is it then that we very often
fail to develop a plan for our life? We have seven areas of
our life: spiritual, mental, vocational, familial, social,
financial and physical. It would be wise if we wrote out a
plan for what we would love to have in all seven areas.
Without a road map we will continue to get lost and loose
hope when we find ourselves going around in circles. We are
going around in circles because we have never taken the time
to search our heart and make a plan for our life.
Whenever I suggest this to one of my
clients; I usually receive a response that suggests how
difficult it is. My reply is, “Can you afford not to do it”?
Good fortune and abundance don’t
happen by chance. They are the result of dedication to
planning. They are the result of persistence and
discipline. But first and foremost they are the result of
planning. By developing a plan we create a vision. By
holding steadfast to that vision we participate in planting
the seeds of good fortune and abundance. We will then be
able to reap a bountiful crop when we are in the season of
the harvest.
How can we get the life we want if
we have never taken the time to decide what it is we do
want?
So my wish for you for this New
Year…is the fulfillment of reaping the fruits of a wonderful
and glorious plan for your life. May you all be the
recipient of “Good Fortune and Abundance”.
